On June 13, 2014, the Department of Science and
Technology of Quang Tri province in collaboration with the National Office of
Intellectual Property (“NOIP”) held a training course on intellectual property
protection on the local specialty goods for the local officers, the leaders of
districts/cities and the Ref. from the traditional professional villages in the
province. The
lecturers from the NOIP provided the participants with the basic knowledge of
the laws on intellectual property, copyrights, plant variety protection, the
management of collective, certification marks and geographical indication as
well as the methods to protect local specialty goods. Managing partner, Pham Vu Khanh Toan
said that “the commonalities between
certification marks, collective marks and geographical indications consisted of
two respects, that were (i) the widely use of mark of business entities, e.g.
for certification marks, all business entities met criteria such as
characteristics of origin, materials, mode of production, mode of distribution,
quality, accuracy, safety or other characteristics of goods or services bearing
the certification mark could be used this mark; for collective marks were the
members of the group (ii) the certification functions of certification marks,
collective marks, geographical indications. In essence, all of three types of
commercial indication had certification functions of a certain aspect. For
certification marks, the function was shown very clearly. How about the others?
The collective marks conveyed a message of goods or services bearing the marks
which being originated from organizations and individuals that were members of
the group and met certain standards, complied with the regulations of using
