Seminar on "Maximising Permissible Exceptions to Intellectual Property Rights to Promote New Generic Drug Production in Vietnam"

In the framework of the project of UNIDO (Vienna) on "Promoting the domestic production of pharmaceuticals" in Vietnam, the Vietnam Pharmaceutical Companies Association (VNPCA) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) co-organized a seminar on "Maximising Permissible exceptions to intellectual property rights to promote new Generic drug production in Vietnam" in Hanoi, HCMC and Can Tho.

The participants attended in the seminar were eminent specialists in the field of medicine and intellectual property in domestic and abroad together with around 300 representatives from pharmaceutical businesses throughout country. The Seminar provided with information, experience, knowledge of intellectual property and industrial property and helped pharmaceutical manufacturers of Vietnam with skills to apply the exception to intellectual property rights in the terms of TRIP agreement for research and development and production of new generic drugs in accordance with the Vietnam laws and international treaties. Among other subjects, Pham & Associates’ presentation covered the following pertinent topics:

1. How patent protection affected production of Generic Drugs?.

2. Legislations on protection of inventions related to pharmaceuticals in Vietnam.

3. Research and Development; Activities of granting visas for generic medicinal products emanated from parallel imports.
