How Honda Copy Motorcycles Disappeared from Vietnamese Market

18/07/2014

Around 10 years ago, there were many Chinese products in Vietnam such as rice, milk, candy, rubber and especially motorcycles, which infringed on Honda’s designs (“Copy M/C”). However, these Copy M/Cs have almost disappeared from the market.

In the early phase, the Copy M/Cs were imported directly from China, all of which were imitated industrial designs of Honda’s Wave α and Dream models. Later, the Copy M/Cs were manufactured and assembled inland and copied virtually all of the best-selling series of Honda such as Wave RS, Wave RSX, Future Neo, Click, Air Blade, etc.

To deal with the acts of intellectual property rights infringement, Honda has planned a methodical/long-term strategy against such infringement. Before 2007, Honda mainly conducted propaganda campaigns and disseminated knowledge on the IP rights to infringers throughout country (e.g. sending Cease and Desist letters to infringers, training the IP law for the competent authorities). From 2007-2011, Honda conducted many big campaigns to raid the acts of infringement, including transport, trade and manufacture. During this period, the number of Copy M/Cs were sanctioned around 5000 M/Cs a year. At one time, Honda set out a plan to raid 1000 M/Cs a month.
