Vietnamese and Korean Intellectual Property Agencies support the development of Quang Nam silk products

Recently, the People's Committee of Duy Xuyen district, Department of Science and Technology of Quang Nam province in coordination with Korea Intellectual Property Agency (KIPO), Korea Patent Promotion Association (KIPA) and the National Office of Intellectual Property (NOIP) held a  closing ceremony of the project "Support to the development of Quang Nam silk products" under the Intellectual Property Sharing Project 2018, a bilateral cooperation between the Department of Intellectual Property Intellectual Property and Korea in Duy Xuyen, Quang Nam province.

This project has been implemented from May 5-12, 2018 aiming at funding Duy Xuyen Farmers Association a silk weaving machine, building the collective mark Ma Chau silk and Quang Nam silk certification. Besides improving the quality of textile products through the supply of machinery and auxiliary equipment, Korean experts have helped Ma Chau silk to build brand identity, making recommendations to further develop the brand by means of product enhancement and promote the linkage between the products and field tourism activities. The trademark of Quang Nam silk was also designed and filed to register for protection at the National Office of Intellectual Property.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, Vice Chairman of Quang Nam People's Committee Tran Van Tan highly appreciated the effectiveness as well as the project's contribution to the restoration and development of traditional silk products of Quang Nam province, contributing to the comprehensive relationship and good cooperation between Korean provinces and Quang Nam in the fields of culture and socio-economy. Vice President wished to receive continued support of KIPO and KIPA to obtain a strong and sustainable development for Ma Chau silk products.

NOIP Director General Dinh Huu Phi expressed his confidence that with the project achievements, Quang Nam silk products in general and Ma Chau silk in particular will soon find a strong foothold in the market, expanding production, improving product quality, contributing to the creation of more jobs in the locality, and especially, preserving the precious cultural values of Quang Nam people.

The Director General noted that the project is a typical model for the application of intellectual property information, using intellectual property to enhance the value of the product, promoting the product commercialization, and he hoped that this model will be replicated in many other provinces throughout the country, so that intellectual property is not only a powerful tool for economic development but also contributes to maintaining, preserving and developing invaluable cultural values of the country.

On behalf of the Korea Intellectual Property Office, Mr. Park Si Young, Head of the Multilateral Cooperation Division shared his happiness with the project's contributions to the local. He expressed his hope that from the initial support of the project, the local government and Ma Chau silk villagers will continue to make efforts to have Ma Chou silk restored and developed soon.
