The 20th Annual Meeting of the ASEAN IPA and AIPPI ASEAN Regional Meeting 2016
The 20th Annual Meeting of the ASEAN Intellectual Property Association (ASEAN IPA) with a title “Looking Ahead: IP in ASEAN” was held from 4-6 March 2016 at Pullman Kuala Lumpur Hotel & Residences in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The Meeting was attended by 183 representatives of IP-related competent authorities and about 80 IP law firms/offices from 10 ASEAN countries.
The Meeting discussed various issues, such as (i) ASEAN’s Strategic IPR Action Plan 2016-2015, (ii) Emerging IP Issues affecting ASEAN, including updates on plain packaging issue – balancing public health and IPR; Implications of the TPPA on IPR in ASEAN and (iii) IP Law updates for ASEAN. The representatives from EU-ASEAN Project on the Protection of IP Rights (ECAP III) and WIPO reviewed the integration and interoperability of the ASEAN Trademarks and Designs systems under the ASEAN IPR Action Plan 2016-2025 and WIPO support of ASEAN IP Ecosystem.
In conjunction of the 20th
Annual Meeting of the ASEAN IPA, one day earlier, on 3 March 2016 and at
the same place, the AIPPI ASEAN Regional Meeting 2016 “Changing IPR Dynamics in
ASEAN” was held to share and update various issues of IP, focusing on ASEAN
Economic Community (AEC) and the impact of Tran-Pacific Partnership Agreement
(TPPA) in ASEAN. In the Meeting, the representatives from Vietnam IP law firms,
including Pham & Associates, had actively contributed to the discussed
issues, especially on matters of taking unfair advantages of trademarks –
parasitism and free riding and inventorship of multinational inventions.
